A diagnosis of cancer or a blood disorder can be frightening, but today there’s more hope than ever before.

FCS is dedicated to providing patients with continued personalized care after treatment to help patients live to their fullest potential. Though many patients go on to lead very healthy, normal lives, we acknowledge that life may never be the same as it was before diagnosis. There can be long-term and late effects of chemotherapy and radiation, including on-going emotional stress, as well as the patient’s desire to prevent cancer recurrence. Our survivorship RN care managers are here to assist you and help address these issues with a variety of recommendations.
Exercise : Physical activity decreases the risk of cancer occurrence and recurrence. Studies also show that patients who exercise on a regular basis tolerate their treatments better, as well as improve their quality of life and emotional well-being, and lessen the severity of fatigue. Physical activity may include activities such as walking, biking or swimming, and should be based on ability and level of endurance. In some locations, FCS partners with other organizations, such as the YMCA, to offer targeted activity and exercise programs specifically designed for cancer patients.
The primary nutrition goal during cancer treatments is to maintain muscle mass and energy. Patients who choose the right foods to stay strong and nourished tend to have more strength and energy, better tolerance of treatment-related side effects, lower infection risk and faster healing and recovery.
Our cooking classes and nutritional consultations can assist in meeting that goal. For patients who wish to use nutritional supplements, including botanicals for purported antitumor effects, it is recommended that they consult with their physician.
Nutrition Counseling and Cooking Classes: Balanced nutrition is a very important part of cancer treatment, as well as survivorship and prevention. Nutrition is offered in over 50 FCS sites with the intention of being available to all by the end of 2021. Virtual cooking classes are conducted via Zoom meeting bimonthly.
